All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vs. Four-Wheel Drive (4WD)
The distinction between All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) lies primarily in how each system manages power distribution to the vehicle's wheels.
Power Distribution
4WD vehicles allow the driver to engage the system as needed. This means the driver has control over when the four-wheel drive is active, making it possible to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive depending on road conditions.
In contrast, AWD vehicles are equipped with a system that continuously distributes power to all wheels automatically. This distribution occurs without driver intervention, ensuring that all wheels receive the necessary power at all times.
Typical Usage
AWD systems are most commonly found in vehicles designed for on-road use. These systems provide enhanced traction, stability, and control, especially in challenging conditions such as snow, ice, and wet roads.
4WD systems, on the other hand, are frequently engineered for off-road driving. They often include a low-range setting, which is particularly useful for navigating steep slopes and uneven terrain.
